March Madness and Mouse Wars

March has really kicked off the farm year with seed sowing, infrastructure projects and the first fresh bouquets of the new season. Mother’s day was busy, bouquets packed with hellebores and narcissus as well as bright and beautiful dried bunches made mothers all over South Wales smile! We even added another Mum to our number at the flower field, just in time for Mother’s day.

Heartbreakingly, the mice have devoured our whole first crop of lovingly nurtured rununculus in the lower tunnel. One nil to the mice, but fear not, we planted a second (slightly later) crop outside in a covered raised bed. Fingers crossed for these beauties, they are looking healthy and are an absolutely gorgeous flower.

We sowed thousands of seeds in soil blocks and tucked them in overnight in the big tunnel only to find them ravaged the next morning. We even have wildlife camera footage of the little blighters bouncing around. Another one in the back of the net for the mice. We have had to get creative for this one and constructed a hanging seedling haven which has proven to be mouse proof, hurray!

After all this there is no way we could trust the mice with our precious dahlia tubers so we have built them a heated bed specially to keep them safe and start propagating strong plants that will give us incredible blooms this summer and autumn. We cant wait for the varieties for this year. We are so excited for the season ahead, thank you for coming along for the ride. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see regular instalments of our flowery progress, and whether we get a cat!
